Waterfront’s Seawall Project Progress

It’s no secret that there are some enormous changes in progress at Seattle’s downtown central waterfront. Construction is in full swing! The noisiest of which will be limited to an impact hammer that will continue to drive thin sheets of steel into the ground to protect Elliott Bay from the construction zone. Construction will be seven days a week, the noisiest of which will cease between the hours of 10pm and 7am.

You can expect to see plenty of coming and going construction vehicles in the area. Utility work is planned at Columbia street and traffic will be safely detoured around the work zone. Getting to and from the waterfront should be easy and all your favorite destinations are open and accessible. However, the construction will result in the temporary closure of more than a dozen businesses on Piers 54, 55, 56 and 57. Unfortunately, if you want to visit Ivar’s Acres of Clams, Elliott’s Oyster House or Ye Olde Curiosity Shop, these are among the quintessential waterfront  businesses that are closed. But don’t worry, The Great Wheel will still be open and illuminated, as well as the Seattle Aquarium. Argosy will also still run cruises, but they will be temporarily operating from Pier 57. Visitors will be able to access the Miner’s Landing collection of shops and restaurants on Pier 57 by walking from the aquarium south through Waterfront Park. Overall, the waterfront remains a vibrant and eclectic neighborhood with plenty to see and explore. Remember, change is good and in the waterfront’s case, it’s inevitable.

The waterfront’s makeover is in full swing as winter approaches in Seattle. In fact, the Seawall Project is currently so popular that they have reached capacity for tours of the project, though more are likely to be held in the coming months. For those lucky enough to sign up in time, November 15th’s tour promises to send chills. Not only winter chills, but chills of excitement for the future of our fair city and it’s masterly planned evolution.
